How to Make Your Own Natural Toothpaste!

As I have been on a mission to replace my toiletries with more natural options, free of harmful chemicals, and free of plastic packaging – one of the first things I needed to replace was my toothpaste! I had initially tried a simple recipe of coconut oil, baking soda, and spearmint oil… which worked.. but I wasn’t convinced. Amongst further research, and trial and error, and asking lots of questions, this recipe was born!

Thanks to a stop and a chat with the women at Soap Cafe in Sliema, I had all that I needed to get going with making my own toothpaste! Please note: I do these in small batches as it is a fresh product – I would recommend you not to dip your toothbrush in it directly, but instead have a tool to scoop it onto your toothbrush.

Our first Ingredient is Bentonite Clay – This simultaneously draws toxins and bad bacteria while also adding various minerals, which remineralizes your teeth.

Second is baking soda – This helps to whiten your teeth through removing stains, and also adds a slight abrasiveness which aids in cleaning your teeth.

The third is sage powder – I just took some dried out sage we had around and processed it to make a powder. Sage is a great addition to your homemade toothpaste since it has antimicrobial properties that kill the microbes responsible for dental plaque.

The Fourth is xylitol – this is optional, but if you are new to using natural toothpaste, and are used to the more sweet, and palatable commercial toothpaste, you may want to add a bit. This will add sweetness, without the damage of normal sugar.

The Fifth is sea salt – This helps to build stronger teeth through preventing tooth decay. It even helps to heal any wounds you may have in your mouth. Use this sparingly, unless you like a really salty toothpaste!

The Sixth Ingredient is peppermint/spearmint oil – This makes it minty fresh! It also kills certain bacterias (anaerobic bacteria) and can help if you have any tooth pain.

The seventh is clove leaf oil – this is both antibacterial and antifungal! It’s also another great one if you have a toothache.

Now, you can stop there, but I also like to add some coconut oil just to get it to a consistency I am more used to with my toothpaste. In Malta, I would leave out the coconut oil during the summer as it will be completely melted. Coconut oil also has many benefits for your teeth, it attacks the harmful bacteria, while also reducing the buildup of plaque, which also helps prevent tooth decay, and fights gum disease!

Just mix it all up – and you have your very own toothpaste!

RECIPE

  1. 2 Tablespoons Bentonite Clay
  2. 2 Tablespoons Baking Soda
  3. 1 Tablespoon Sage Powder
  4. 1 Tablespoon Xylitol
  5. Pinch of Salt
  6. 20 drops of peppermint/spearmint oil
  7. 4 drops of Clove Leaf Oil
  8. Add Coconut Oil until you reach your desired consistency

Mix it all together, and there you go! Of course, you do not need to add all of these ingredients – but here is the mix that I use, and some information about natural ingredients that help keep your mouth clean. Feel free to play around with which ones you use or don’t, and the quantities of each (but don’t overdo the clove oil!).

Have you ever tried to make your own toothpaste before? What ingredients did you use? 🙂
